Sponge Bunnies

Resource materials: picture books of animals and where they live.

Materials and equipment: 8 x 10.5" art paper provided by Art to Remember • washable tempera or poster paint • markers • paintbrushes, 1/2” and 1” easel brushes • styrofoam trays or disposable paper paint cups • sponges cut into shapes to create body, head, ears and feet of your bunny.

Step 1: Paint the background. Where does your bunny live? In the woods? In a field or meadow? Allow the painting to dry thoroughly.

Step 2: Prepare thinned white paint in trays or paint cups. Teacher demonstrates proper way to sponge print. Decide where you want your bunnies to be on your paper. Dip body sponge shape into paint and press on the paper. Lift the sponge carefully so you don’t smear your bunny. Sponge print head, ears and feet. Allow to dry thoroughly.

Step 3: Add details such as whiskers, claws and inside of bunny ears with markers.

Teacher note: Parent helpers or aides can be utilized to facilitate drying time with hairdryers. Children can practice on newsprint if there is time. This lesson can be modified for other animal. such as dogs, cats and bears.
