Reverse Name Design

Resource materials: Patterns used in Islamic Art and Kaleidoscopes provide excellent teaching tools for this lesson.

Materials and equipment: 8 x 10.5" art paper provided by Art to Remember• sharpened #2 pencil or mechanical pencil • eraser - just in case • fine point markers in various colors • one penny per student

Step 1: Fold the rectangle piece of paper to 8” x 5.25”.

Step 2: Fold again. When opened, there will be 4 sections.

Step 3: Now fold once - long end to long end. When opened, there will be 8 sections.

Step 4:
On one section, write their initials (or short name) in pencil lightly. Hint: The lines have to touch the folds. Use block or bubble letters.

Step 5: When the name or initial is completed darken the lines.

Step 6: Fold the section down or over the next empty space.

Step 7: Rub the back of the drawing to transfer the penciled name on the next space. It will either be upside down or backwards.

Step 8: Trace the section that was rubbed. Repeat the process until all sections are filled.

Step 9: Add color. Marker or paint works best.
