Create a Clown

Resource materials: illustrated circus stories, circus posters. Fun to have someone dressed as a clown to visit the class.

Materials and equipment: 8 x 10.5" art paper provided by Art to Remember • pencils • markers.

Step 1: Talk about the different kinds of clowns the students have seen at the circus or in the visuals presented – sad, happy, funny, silly! Students can practice making faces in the mirror to create their own original clown.

Step 2: Draw outline of one or more clown faces. Add facial features – remember to exaggerate. Add silly hats, funny wigs to give your clown an original personality.

Step 3: Color with markers adding pattern to clothing such as stripes or polka dots. Add buttons, bow ties or suspenders. You might outline entire clown with a darker marker.

Step 4: Color the background completely with contrasting color or a circus background such as crowds or circus tents.
