Butterfly Collage

Resource materials: display pictures of colorful butterflies. Discuss symmetry with your students before starting this artwork. Ask students to name objects that are symmetrical, or equal on each side.

Materials and equipment: 8 x 10.5" art paper provided by Art to Remember • yellow paper can be provided which makes a colorful contrast for the butterfly collage • construction paper in assorted colors — cut into squares to make butterfly wings • glue • glue sticks or school glue • scissors.

Step 1: Give students a choice of two colors for their butterfly wings. One color for top and one for lower wings. Top two can be larger than bottom wings. Cut two wings together so they will be symmetrical.

Step 2: Draw the shape of a butterfly wing on each set of colored paper squares. You may want to provide patterns for students to outline.

Step 3: Cut out wings and arrange on background paper leaving a space in the middle for a body and antennae. Glue wings securely on background.

Step 4: Deccorate butterfly wings with assorted small shapes equally on each wing. Glue body and antennae parts last. These pieces can be precut by teacher in assorted colors and distributed to students. Check artwork to make sure all pieces are secuely glued.
